How do I get AI agents to recommend my business?
An AI agent recommends what it can retrieve, parse and verify in the seconds it spends on your category, nothing else. There is no ranking to climb and no algorithm to court. The agent fetches a handful of pages, extracts facts, and composes a recommendation from what those pages support.
Getting recommended reduces to three conditions: be present on the pages agents fetch, be readable when they arrive, and be verifiable when they cross-check.
The demand is measurable. In one 14-day sample of our network logs in August 2026, a single guide on this exact question was fetched 683 times by AI agents, inside 119,000 fetches of agent-era coverage overall. The question is being asked at scale. Most businesses are absent from the pages that answer it.
Condition 1: be present where agents read
Agents answering a recommendation query fetch three kinds of surface:
- Category verdict pages. Round-ups, comparisons, versus pages, directories. These are fetched daily and set the default consideration set. If your name is absent from the round-ups agents read, you are not in the answer, regardless of product quality.
- Authority coverage. Trade and news pages carrying your category. Our fetch logs show a small number of publications carry most of a topic's reads (on one topic surface, three publications carried 70%). Presence there compounds.
- Your own site. The primary source for your own facts, if agents can use it.
The fetch data is the targeting map: which round-ups, which publications, which questions. Guessing is the expensive alternative.
Condition 2: be readable when the agent arrives
Agents fail quietly on sites built purely for human browsers. What we see across categories:
- Plain server-rendered HTML wins. Retrieval bots overwhelmingly fetch ordinary HTML pages, and heavy client-side rendering hides content from them entirely. A JavaScript app shell gives an agent a few dozen words.
- Token economics are real. Advanced agents operate under context budgets, and every overlay, hover menu and script-heavy template adds steps. In our benchmark with KERNEL across five test stores, an agent-facing version of the same site completed tasks 24–35% faster with up to 38% fewer steps. Agents route toward wherever the task completes.
- Answer pages beat brochure pages. A page that directly answers one question an agent carries ("what does X cost", "X versus Y", "does X integrate with Z") is retrievable. A page of positioning language is not.
Condition 3: be verifiable
Agents cross-check. The facts that survive composition into a recommendation are the ones stated consistently wherever the agent looks:
- Exact prices, dates, specifications, availability, stated plainly and updated when they change.
- The same numbers on your site and on third-party pages. Contradictions lower confidence in all of them.
- Claims an agent can ground ("supports X", "ships to Y") rather than superlatives it is trained to discount.
Where to start
- Pull the question list for your category from fetch data, the questions agents actually carry, not a brainstormed prompt list.
- Publish one clean answer page per question you can win.
- Fix machine readability on the pages that matter before redesigning anything else.
- Close the gaps on the verdict pages agents already read.
- Measure reads, then referrals, then presence in answers, in that order, because that is the order the system works in.
AI is its own visitor, and this is the same work you did for mobile a decade ago: same business, same facts, a surface built for how this visitor reads. TollBit Intelligence supplies step 1 from reads across 10,000+ sites. The Agent Site CMS does steps 2 and 3 without touching the human site, and the same logs do step 5.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an "AI version" of my site? You need your facts reachable by agents. Whether that is your existing site cleaned up or an agent-facing rendering served only to bots, the test is the same: can an agent complete its task on your pages in seconds. For most sites with JavaScript rendering, overlays or anti-bot layers, the agent-facing rendering is the faster fix.
How do I find out what agents ask about my category? Agents leak intent through what they fetch. Server logs across many sites reconstruct the question families behind the fetches, which is the demand side of every recommendation query.
How long until presence changes answers? Retrieval-driven answers move with the pages behind them, over days to weeks as caches roll over, not the months search optimization trained everyone to expect. Cadence varies by platform.
