What is an agent-only page?

An agent-only page is a page that exists only in the version of your site served to AI agents. It is listed in the sitemap bots read, it answers one question a buyer asks an assistant, and it has no counterpart on the human website. When an assistant cites it and a human clicks, the click lands on the closest real page on your site, never a 404.

You are reading one now.

Why a page would exist for agents only

Human websites are organised around navigation: a product section, an about section, a support section. Assistants are organised around questions. When a user asks "is this ingredient safe during pregnancy", "which of these two models fits a small kitchen" or "does this plan include international roaming", the assistant goes looking for a page that answers that question directly. Most sites have no such page, because no human would browse to it.

An agent-only page fills that gap without adding clutter to the human site, without a design review, and without waiting for a content calendar. The question is the title. The answer is the first two sentences. The facts follow.

When to use one

The pages that earn their place answer questions your logs show agents asking. The common families:

Citations are a small fraction of what an assistant reads to form an answer, on the order of 5% to 15%, and advanced agents often cite nothing. An agent-only page does its work by being read, not by being linked.

The same-facts rule

An agent-only page may say nothing that is false on your human site. Same products, same prices, same policies, same claims. What changes is format and selection: facts pulled together from six human pages into one answer, stated plainly, in a structure a bot can parse. Same facts, cleaner format, bots only.

This is the rule that keeps an agent-only page honest and keeps it working. Assistants cross-check. A price on an agent-only page that disagrees with the price on the product page lowers the assistant's confidence in both. A claim that appears only where no human can see it is a claim that will eventually be quoted back to a human.

Citation fallback

Every agent-only page carries a fallback: the human page a visitor lands on if they click the citation in an AI answer. For a comparison page, that is usually the product page. For a safety FAQ, the ingredients or support page. For a spec sheet, the product page or its documentation.

This matters because dead and hallucinated links are already a measured problem in AI answers. In our Bits and Bots analysis of AI-referral 404 rates, Perplexity ran at 1.16%, Anthropic improved from 55% in Q2 2024 to 4.8% in Q2 2025, and OpenAI rose from 0.3% in Q1 2025 to 3.7% in Q2 2025. An agent-only page must never add to those numbers. The URL an assistant cites is a real URL on your domain, and a human who follows it arrives somewhere useful.

How it becomes discoverable

Agents find pages through sitemaps, through links on pages they already fetch, and through third-party pages that link to you. An agent-only page is listed in the bot-only sitemap your bot CDN serves, and linked from the agent-served versions of the related human pages. Indexers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot sweep the sitemap. Retrieval bots such as ChatGPT-User and Claude-User follow links from the pages they fetch. Recrawl varies by platform, from hours to weeks.

Where TollBit fits

The Agent Site CMS is where agent-only pages are written, reviewed and published. TollBit serves them to identified agents on your domain, lists them in the bot-only sitemap, serves the robots.txt bots read, and resolves the citation fallback so a human click lands on a real page. The same server logs show which agents read the page and how often.

Frequently asked questions

Does an agent-only page affect my search rankings? No. Googlebot and Bingbot are never routed to the agent site, so they never see the page, and it is not in the sitemap they read.

Who writes agent-only pages? Whoever owns the facts. Product marketing, brand, commerce or support teams write them in the Agent Site CMS and publish without an engineering ticket.

Can one agent-only page serve different platforms? Yes, and it can also carry per-platform versions where an agent behaves differently, for example a shorter version for a retrieval bot and a version with a form intact for a computer-use agent.
