What the tool does
The Scraper Audit Tool lets you safely test your site against 14 scraping tools using the same enterprise-grade configurations their customers use in production.
You can:
- Select any page on your site to test
- Initiate live scraping attempts
- Observe whether articles are scraped in full or partially
And you can do this all with no technical setup required. These are real scrapers and real results.
Results we have found
Paywalls are not a guarantee of protection
Some scraping tools were able to extract full paywalled articles, even when modern access controls were in place.
Non-paywalled sites fared no better
Non-paywalled domains showed no meaningful increase in protection, with most scrapers retrieving complete content regardless of subscription barriers.
True blocking was rare
Only 3 out of 30 sites successfully blocked all tested scrapers. In each case, success was primarily driven by server-side paywall implementations rather than traditional client-side controls.
How to use the tool
Step 1
Enter an article URL from your site
Start by pasting any article URL from your website into the tool.
Choose which of the scraping tools you want to test. You can select individual scrapers or select all. Then click Run Test.
Each scraper will attempt to retrieve your content using enterprise-grade configurations, including advanced parsing, proxy networks, and bot evasion techniques. Tests typically complete in 1 second to over a minute, depending on the page and infrastructure.
Step 2
See which scrapers succeeded
As results come in, you'll see:
- Successes
- Failures
Important Note:
A “success” does not automatically mean the scraper retrieved your full article. Some tools only extract part of the content.
To verify full article extraction:
- Grab a portion of one of the last sentences in an article.
- Search for these words in the scraping tool after the results from scrapers are no longer loading.
- If the scraper appears still in the results view, the scraper retrieved your full content. If not, it only captured part of the page. You can also look at exactly what was scraped by following #3.
This simple method makes it easy to distinguish between partial and complete exposure.
Step 3
Inspect exactly what was returned
Click View Scraped Content to examine what the scraper actually retrieved.
You are able to see:
- Whether the content was returned in HTML
- Whether it was converted into markdown
- Whether the scraper stopped at the paywall
This level of visibility allows you to move beyond assumptions and see precisely what third parties can access.
