TollBit Partners with Akamai to Power the Future of AI Traffic Monetization

We’re excited to announce our new technical alliance with Akamai Technologies, the cybersecurity and cloud computing company that powers and protects business online. Together, we’re helping publishers and site owners protect their websites, enforce fair usage, and unlock sustainable revenue streams from the next wave of AI traffic.

Meeting the AI Traffic Surge Head-On

AI bots and agents are visiting websites at unprecedented rates—often scraping without permission, payment, or attribution. Akamai sees more than 150 billion bot requests every day across its network, underscoring the massive scale of this challenge.

With Akamai’s unmatched detection and enforcement capabilities at the edge, combined with TollBit’s analytics and monetization, site owners can now do more than just block unwanted bots. They can redirect them into structured, revenue-generating pathways that finally align the economics of the web with the realities of the AI era.

“We see firsthand the surge in AI-driven traffic. Partnering with Akamai and TollBit gives us the capabilities to protect our content, the tools to monitor AI bot traffic, manage it on our terms, and a new path to monetize AI access.”

How TollBit Complements Akamai

TollBit transforms scraping into sanctioned, revenue-generating access by installing a “toll booth” on websites that monitors AI traffic, authenticates it, and monetizes content requests. TollBit provides executives with clear, AI-specific analytics that show how bots are engaging with their content and the business impact of that traffic.

Together with Akamai’s Bot & Abuse solutions, TollBit adds the missing transaction layer: authenticating AI agents, enabling payments, and giving publishers full control over who can access their content, at what price, and under what conditions. This combination ensures that AI traffic is not only detected but also governed and monetized at scale—on terms defined by the site itself.

A Shared Vision for the Agent Economy

This technical alliance represents a major step toward building a sustainable “agent economy,” where autonomous AI visitors transact responsibly and site owners are fairly compensated.

“Site owners deserve fair compensation for how their content is used in the AI ecosystem. By pairing TollBit’s analytics and monetization tools with Akamai’s scale and detection capabilities, we’re enabling a shift from unauthorized scraping to sustainable monetization.” Toshit Panigrahi, Co-founder and CEO

“We’re excited to offer our customers greater flexibility in managing and monetizing AI traffic—without locking them into a single platform,” said Patrick Sullivan, CTO of Security Strategy at Akamai. “By partnering with TollBit, we empower our customers to take control—whether they choose to block scrapers, allow trusted agents, or charge for premium access—all in real time and at the edge.”

What This Means for Websites

With TollBit and Akamai, Websites now have:

  • Powerful detection at the edge to identify and stop unauthorized AI traffic

  • Visibility with TollBit Analytics to better understand AI scraping patterns

  • Granular control to enforce access rules and pricing on their own terms

  • A path to monetization that turns scraping into licensed transactions

Together, we’re building the trusted transaction layer for the AI-driven web—where value flows fairly, transparently, and sustainably.

Bits and Bots: Analyzing HTTP 404 errors

Every quarter, our State of the Bots report offers a snapshot of how AI bots are interacting with the open web. In our latest report, the Q2 2025 State of the Bots report, one data point that particularly caught our attention was how often AI answers contained dead or hallucinated links. These show up as HTTP 404 errors when users click those links from a chatbot and land on a page that doesn’t exist.
